John Leggett – Operations Manager

John served 26 years in the Australian Regular Army followed by some 24 years as a management consultant for government, private and international programs. Throughout his career he has gained much experience as a senior manager, management consultant, manager educator and project manager. Since 2010, he brings this extensive management and organisational experience to his role at Soils for Life.

Richard is a research scientist with over 30 years’ experience in classifying, assessing and reporting on Australia's landscapes and natural resources. His research has been adopted by regional, state and national land use policy and planners and land managers. Richard is Visiting Fellow at ANU, UNSW ADFA and an Adjunct Associate Professor at UQ.

Niree Creed - Media adviser

Niree Creed - Media adviser

Niree Creed has been a journalist, public relations expert and media adviser for over 40 years, and she brings all that experience to her role as Media Adviser at Soils for Life. Much of her television background has involved agriculture and rural affairs. This new role combines her passion for agriculture and her experience in extending the work of Soils for Life to a wider audience.

Don McDonough - School gardens

Don McDonough - School gardens

Don has been associated with Michael Jeffery for some 60 years. Upon retirement in 2009, he joined Michael Jeffery to gather soils ‘data' for use in his initial activities in this area. On the establishment of Soils for Life, Don sought, recorded and filed soil and water information. More recently, he began managing the School Gardens Program.

Madeleine Florin - Social media

Madeleine brings her combination of research and communication experience to Soils for Life. She has worked for eight years in soil science, agronomy and farming systems research, in both Australia and the Netherlands. More recently she has worked on the interface of research and practice, building bridges between researchers, policy makers and land managers through communication tools on print and web media.

Ichsani Wheeler

Ichsani Wheeler - Social media

Ichsani (Ish) is a land and water scientist committed to using research to solve real world restoration problems. She has a PhD in soil carbon monitoring and is an internationally experienced researcher, consultant and teacher. She works from the local to the global inter-governmental scales, taking her from designing land restoration and monitoring with landholders, up to compiling land degradation data and statistics for SDG reporting under the UNCCD. Ish is a long time lover of all things soil.

Greg Hosking - Researcher

Greg Hosking - Researcher

Greg Hosking graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor degree in Forest Science. He has previously worked on wildlife research programs for the ACT Parks and Conservation Service and a Professor from The Australian National University. He is from a cattle and sheep farming background and enjoys returning to the family farm as often as possible.

Jeffrey Castellas - Advisor

Jeffrey is an expert in strategy, policy, partnerships, commercialisation and growth for sustainable development. He has 20 years business, consulting and corporate advisory experience in resource management, stakeholder engagement and corporate advisory in the agricultural, climate change, water, energy, forestry, food and environmental sectors. He advises government, indigenous and public and private companies in Australia, Canada, China and India.


Terry Harkness

Terry Harkness

Terry is a qualified accountant (CPA) with more than 30 years’ experience in a variety of industries including manufacturing, retail, hospitality, mining and waste recycling. Moreover, he has worked as an operations/quality safety and environment manager for the green waste recycling industry and played voluntary treasury roles for Landcare Illawarra and Repower Shoalhaven.
